Abstract

In Nigeria, several trees which yield fruits of nutritional and medicinal importance have been identified within the forest and savannah regions. One such important but less known legume protein source is the African oil bean seed. While the literature shows its effect in treatment of hypercholesterolemia, reduced risk of cancer and tobacco-related diseases, no case study from the available literature search has reported its antihypertensive effect. We report a case of resistant hypertension that improved remarkably on ingestion of the African oil bean seed, with a call for more studies and clinical trials on the possible antihypertensive property of the African oil bean seed. Extraction of the likely putative content may increase the available literature of anti hypertensives available for patient care.
